Disclaimer - Now, some of the points mentioned below might not be applicable to your given environment, so just ignore them. As India is such a diversified nation, where we find almost every other kind of Soil and Air, it is a necessity for us to cover all the aspects that will work in all given conditions.

1 - Check your Car's Battery Health

Car batteries find themselves the weakest in the winter seasons. Why, you ask? Then, the winter seasons offer a lot of cold environments throughout its span. Such cold environments are terrible for your battery’s Health. Let us explain -

A car battery has a very simple job, to give some thermal power to the starter motor, to start the engine. However, as the temperatures and the environment outside are cold, so does it lack the needed warmth, which ultimately, makes the battery not being fulfilled with enough thermal power to start the engine.

It is a very simple equation - Thermal Energy ( Weather ) → Electrical Energy ( Battery ) → Mechanical Energy ( Engine ). If there is not enough Thermal power to make the battery create enough heat, it is evident that the engine will not start, and ultimately, your battery will lose power and, thereafter, be dead.

2 - Cold Start the Car's Engine every day

The word ‘Cold Starting’ itself defines this point. Cold starting the engine is essential and good for any car’s engine health. Cars have huge 1 Liter + engines, they need to be heated before they are used full-fledged.

If not done so, then you might not notice this as quickly, but your car’s engine is suffering horribly. So, let us get this straight. Imagine your car’s engine as a mobile phone’s battery. When you switch on a dead mobile phone, it takes quite a few minutes to get working it turns on every electrical unit inside it during that time. You might also notice that your lags a bit if start using it right after you switched it on from dead. This is what a car’s engine would do if you start using it before giving it some time to cold start. It would not work at its full potential if it had not been given any time to get warmed up. Therefore, this is bad for the long run of your engine.

So, the question is, For how much time do we keep the engine idle after it is ignited? Well, one to two minutes is adequate in other seasons, but especially, in winter, prefer keeping it idle for about three to four minutes .

3 - Check the Tire Pressure often

Tire pressures are the second annoying thing to look after in the winter seasons, now, why annoying, you ask? Then basically, just like a car’s battery, tire pressure, too, needs frequent checking.

In the winter season, the temperatures are low, which makes the air inside the tire become denser, and further drop in pressure. Well, this does not mean that tire pressure drops only in the winter, but it also drops gradually over time. So, ultimately, when adding up both these consequences, the tire pressure in the winter season happens to go down subsequently. Therefore, having regular checks in this area helps a lot.

A more convenient option is basically, adding a TPMS or Tire Pressure Monitoring System in your car. Nowadays, in a few new cars, this system is already fitted as standard, but if your car happens to not have this particular system, no worries, as it could be fitted aftermarket.

4 - Replace your Engine Oil

Engine oil is basically, the liquid which makes the mechanicals work smoothly inside the engine. It is a necessity, after all. However, with the advancing technology nowadays, we all are seeing some great variables of engine oils, which makes it suited for various conditions, be it Rough Off-road, Dusty, Hot Climate, Rainy, etc. So there is a variable for the winter season. It is better to change the engine oil of your car and replace it with a better-suited one for the winter conditions.

Otherwise, let us say that you are ready or comfortable to change the current engine oil, you are using for your car, just because you feel it is much better for your vehicle. Then be it, there is no need for you to change it, but there is a need to empty it and then refill it.

We do not mean that you have to change the engine oil and choose a winter-suited engine oil for your car, as a compulsion. The point is that in winter conditions, even the oil becomes a bit slow in terms of its flow towards the engine, which ultimately stresses the engine components.

So, technically, it is better to empty your engine oil and then refill it.

5 - Check the AC unit and the Defogger

Defoggers in Winters

Winter season appears and there is this annoying happening of windshield fogging. It is, very annoying, we are so agreed to this. However, the bigger picture or the problem is that even today, we have noticed people cleaning up the fog with their hands while they are driving, which is a definite issue all around India.

This brings up a lot of unnecessary risks of a fatal crash, and that is why having a fine-working defogger is so important. So, have a thorough in your car’s Climate Control system and check if both, the front and the rear defoggers are working with such issues.
