VinFast confirms India entry with New Local Vehicle Assembly Plant

Indian Automobile Industry is scaling in terms of volume and quality. Every other International carmaker who has not yet operated in India or has operated earlier, but had to leave India for some reason, wants to come again and try their luck. Brands like Tesla, Mitsubishi, etc want to enter India to bring their best products in. One such brand happens to be a Vietnam-based Car manufacturer named, VinFast. It is about to enter the Indian market, as it has commenced the preparations for that it is not going to be like some other international car brand, as it is establishing its facility in India. So, let us get into the topic of VinFast confirming India entry with the New Local Vehicle Assembly Plant, and understand their strategy. 



What is VinFast?

VinFast is a Vietnam-based brand that was founded in 2017 by Pham Nhat Vuong. It is also the first Vietnamese Car brand to expand its presence globally. It built its first-ever Car manufacturing plant in Vietnam in 2017. 

VinFast mainly focuses on producing Electric vehicles ranging from cars, scooters, and buses, it also sells a few ICE-powered cars.

Both of these cars belong to the premium segment of cars and these cars were made in collaboration with BMW, where they were based on the 2017 generation of BMW 5-series and X5, respectively. Under the hood, they packed the BMW N20 turbocharged petrol engine, which had an option between 175 hp and 225 hp.

In 2018, it collaborated with some big American and German companies like General Motors and Siemens, respectively. The joint venture with GM was specifically to child a small car under the brand name of VinFast, and with Siemens, they jointly worked on various advanced technologies used in their cars. 

VinFast is widely present in the ASEAN markets and is heavily popular for its Lux series of cars. In 2019,  it also exported this series to Europe, Australia, and Africa. It gained popularity so rapidly that in 2020, it became the fifth-best-selling car brand in Vietnam. 



About VinFast's Indian Facility

VinFast Tamil Nadu plant


VinFast has made a deal with the Government of Tamil Nadu, which includes the manufacturing of its only Electric car plant. VinFast is set to make an investment of $500 Million to establish a production plant in Tamil Nadu’s 400-acre area. This investment will be made in parts over the next 5 years. 

Once this facility is made VinFast confirmed that it will create job opportunities for around 3000 - 3500 workers. This plant will also have a production capacity of over 1,50,000 cars. 

By this local manufacturing plant of VinFast, the company says that will contribute to the efforts made to spread awareness about Localization in India. It also states that this plant will contribute well enough to the GDP of India, once operations start. 

VinFast is looking forward to making India one of the biggest export hubs for other markets. 



VinFast EVs in India

As said earlier, this plant is a full-electric car plant. It will produce around 1,50,000 electric cars per annum in India, out of which, some will be sold in India and others will be exported. 

It also claims that VinFast cars which will be produced and sold in India, will have premium quality and will be priced competitively for the Indian consumers. This will for sure help them go crazy in terms of sales in India.

Talking about what EVs will VinFast produce in its upcoming Indian plant - Most probably, VinFast will commence by entering the Midsize SUV market with its VF 6. The VF 6 is a Creta-rivaling SUV, which has a battery pack of 60 kWh giving a driving range of 400 km. It produces 174 hp and 250 Nm of Torque. We believe the VF 6 will have a price tag of ₹18 lacs ex-showroom. It will also get a slew of ADAS features. It will arrive in the Indian showrooms of VinFast by 2030.
