Say Bye to 2.8 L Diesel Fortuner - New 300 hp Petrol Fortuner launching soon

September 28th, 2024

The Toyota Fortuner is due for an update worldwide. The current generation of the Fortuner is almost a decade old now. With minor yet important updates on a yearly basis, Toyota has been dragging the Fortuner for a long time. Still, the Fortuner cannot be called an updated SUV because it misses out on a lot of stuff being a ₹60 lakh full-size SUV.

The Fortuner rivals the likes of MG Gloster, Jeep Merdian, Skoda Kodiaq, BMW X1, etc. All of this competition offers a lot more on the table compared to the Fortuner. However, Fortuner being the most undervalued SUV, still sells the most in its segment with an average monthly sales of 2000 - 3000 units - The only reason for this is its 2.8 L Diesel engine.

Toyota Fortuner’s current 2.8 L Diesel Engine -

This massive Diesel engine has to be one of the major reasons for Fortuner’s tremendous success in India. Having 2800 cc displacement and generating way less than what it is capable of - 200 hp and 500 Nm torque - has made the Fortuner mechanically unbeatable.

Toyota is known for its reliability, and in the Indian market, currently, Fortuner is the most reliable car/SUV. There are Fortuners out there who have been driven for over 5 lakh kilometers, and they still drive like new ones. This 2.8 L Diesel engine is a gem, as it produces less than its capabilities which gives minimal mechanical stress on the engine. Ultimately, it ends up running long

But, with the next generational update of the Fortuner, the SUV will bid farewell to its legendary 2.8 L Diesel engine. As this engine has been one of the most expensive ones, thanks to the Indian Taxation policies and Diesel ban in India rumors. So, if this engine is going out, then what is coming in with the 2025 Fortuner?

New 300 hp Turbo Petrol engine for the 2025 Toyota Fortuner

The very strong speculation states that a new 2.0L, 4-cylinder, Turbo Petrol engine is under production for the 2025 Toyota Fortuner. This engine will be capable of producing 300 hp and almost 300 - 450 Nm torque. This engine will also be mated to a DCT gearbox, which will make the 2025 Fortuner the most affordable Toyota to offer a DCT gearbox.

Currently, there is one petrol unit in the Fortuner’s lineup but, that engine will also be discontinued - as it is the least preferred unit. This engine also produces very less for the size of Fortuner, ultimately, making it a heavy fuel drinker. It is a 2.7L Petrol engine - producing 164 hp and 245 Nm torque.

Secondly, this new 2.0L Turbo petrol engine will make the Fortuner cost way less than it is now. As we said, the main issue with the Fortuner is its humongous 2.8L Diesel engine, as the taxes in India are very strict for engines above 2000 cc. This new 2.0L engine will bring down the prices significantly having itself saved from the taxes.

Toyota will also most likely introduce a Hybrid drivetrain for the Fortuner using the same 2.0L petrol engine. This Hybrid drivetrain will make the Fortuner the first SUV in its segment to have a Hybrid drivetrain. It will also help the Fortuner to be more fuel-efficient than the normal ICE model. If this drivetrain arrives in the Fortuner, it will be a proper Strong Hybrid system with a big battery for assistance.

What to expect in the 2025 Fotuner?

The 2025 Fortuner will be the Third generation of the entry-level premium full-size SUV from Toyota. This SUV will be a huge step up from the current Fortuner with a new design, engine, and features. The design aspect cannot be talked about but, we believe that it could have its design inspired by Toyota’s SUV for America - 4Runner, Sequoia, Land Cruiser, etc.

The feature list will have a lot of features added, like ADAS Level 2, a Bigger Infotainment screen with Wireless Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, Cooling Ventilated seats, Electric Seats, Panoramic Sunroof, Full Digital Instrument Cluster, 3 Zone Automatic Climate Control, Auto Park feature (tentative), etc.

We have talked about the Petrol engines with the upcoming 2025 Fortuner. The prices of the Fortuner will most probably be reduced to a more convincible margin - ₹40 - 45 lakhs. The Launch of the 2025 Fortuner is expected to happen by the end of 2025.
