Mahindra Thar 5-door to be unveiled globally on August 15th in South Africa

June 24th, 2023

Mahindra will unveil the widely awaited Thar 5-door at its annual Independence Day celebration this year.  Mahindra will unveil a brand-new car for the fourth time on August 15; the business previously unveiled the 2020 Thar, 2021 XUV700, and its born-electric concepts in the UK the year before. This year's event will take held in South Africa.

Thar plans to exploit the South African market as a global one, thus its introduction is crucial. Mahindra has been operating there since 1996 and lately showed growth in business. With the XUV300, XUV700, and Scorpio N already available in South Africa, the company hopes to expand its SUV selection by include the Thar.

With greater comfort and utility for the whole family, the Mahindra off-roader can now appeal to a larger market of people searching for a tough, versatile SUV. A logical extension of the Thar product line is the 5-door model. Something that the recently unveiled Maruti Suzuki Jimny offers.

But the Thar will be positioned higher. Greater sizes of the 2.2-liter diesel and 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol engines from the 3-door Thar will be offered. Compared to the 5-door Jimny, which measures 3,985mm in length and 1,645mm and 1,720mm in width and height, the 5-door Thar is wider and higher at 1,820mm and 1,850mm, respectively.

The 5-door Thar will almost probably seat five people, and given the extra length, which is apparent in the spy photos, there is even a potential of a third row, in contrast to the 4-passenger configuration of the Jimny and the 3-door Thar.

The images also demonstrate that other than the addition of rear doors and a longer body, the SUV will generally follow the form of the Thar 3-door. The overall length will exceed the 4-meter limit that the 3-door Thar presently abides by due to an increase of about 30mm between the wheels. Given that it will exceed the 4 million threshold, it will not be eligible for the small vehicle tax incentive, therefore the recently announced 1.5-liter diesel engine is not expected to be found beneath its hood. The other engine specifications will resemble those of the present 3-door variant.

Launch

Rajesh Jejurikar, executive director & CEO (Auto and Farm Sector), Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd., had stated that the 5-door Thar will make its market debut in India sometime in 2024 after its introduction.
