In 2025 the battle for India's top-selling SUV is becoming tougher. The competition is between two strongest rivals—Tata Punch and Hyundai Creta—both of which have ruled sales for the entire previous year. The March 2025 sales will reveal which SUV will occupy the No. 1 position with just 2,041 units between the duo.
This fierce fight reflects India's increasing love for SUVs and MPVs, the market leaders. Nine of the top ten models have already crossed 100,000 units each in the first 11 months of FY2025 alone.
Let's see the numbers, trends, and reasons why this fight is one of India's important wars.
Tata Motors' Tata Punch is a force to be reckoned with in the compact SUV segment. It is Tata Motors' top-selling model and currently dominating the SUV sales chart for FY2025.
178,853 units sold during April 2024 to February 2025, with a 17% YoY growth.
During CY2024, the Punch has sold 202,031 units, achieving the No. 1 SUV spot.
The Punch is offered with various powertrain options—petrol, CNG, and electric, which has widened its customer base.
It dispatched 169,844 units in FY2024, witnessing a 27% YoY increase.
Tata Punch has been outpacing its twin, the Tata Nexon, which was the top-selling SUV in FY2024. The reasonable price, mileage, and compact city-friendly size of the Punch have become increasingly popular among Indian consumers.
The Hyundai Creta, the best-selling Indian midsize SUV, is narrowing in on the Tata Punch. The just-released generation Creta, released in January 2024, has enormously enhanced the model. Hyundai has also added another boost with the release of the Creta Electric in January 2025.
176,812 units sold between April 2024 and February 2025, an increase of 21% YoY.
January 2025 saw the highest ever month's sales ever at 18,522 units—highest ever monthly sales of Creta.
But sales fell by 12% in February, fairly softening its rhythm.
The Creta in FY2024 retailed 162,773 units, up 8% YoY.
If Creta keeps performing like its January in March 2025, it would leave the Tata Punch behind and become the No. 1 SUV in FY2025.
The growing dominance of SUVs in India is evident from the sales figures of other popular models. While the Punch and Creta lead the race, Maruti Suzuki’s Brezza and Ertiga are not far behind.
Maruti Ertiga (MPV): 174,170 units sold (+30% YoY), just 2,642 units behind Creta.
Maruti Brezza (Compact SUV): 172,617 units sold (+11% YoY).
Maruti Fronx: 152,547 units sold (+25% YoY), ahead of the Tata Nexon.
Mahindra Scorpio (N + Classic): 150,929 units sold (+20% YoY).
Tata Nexon: 146,723 units sold (-7% YoY), with an unexpected drop despite good brand recall.
Maruti Grand Vitara: 113,528 units sold (+3% YoY).
Hyundai Venue: 108,672 units sold (-9% YoY), struggling to deal with competition.
Toyota Innova (MPV): 97,348 units sold (+10% YoY), still favored by families and fleet operators.
The MPV and SUV segment as a whole continues to be ultra-competitive, with every vendor refining their strategies to pick up market share.
The Tata Punch has petrol, CNG, and electric variants, which find appeal in a wide base.
The Hyundai Creta has ICE (petrol & diesel) and EV variants, which find appeal in conventional and EV buyers.
Tata Punch is a subcompact SUV, hence comparatively less costly (₹6 lakh–₹10 lakh).
Hyundai Creta is a mid-size SUV, hence more costly (₹11 lakh–₹19 lakh).
The lower cost of Punch makes it attractive to new SUV buyers, while Creta benefits from buyers of premium SUVs.
Hyundai’s reliability and after-sales service give Creta an edge, making it the go-to midsize SUV.
Punch offers a good mix of tech at an affordable price.
Creta provides segment-leading features such as a panoramic sunroof, ADAS, and digital cockpit, making it the more premium option.
The March 2025 sales numbers will finally reveal if Tata Punch remains No. 1 or Hyundai Creta pips it at the post at the last minute. Trends aside:
If Tata Punch continues as it has till now, it will remain where it is.
If Hyundai Creta matches its January 2025 sales, it might beat Punch and take the lead.
A good EV push and an expanding midsize SUV segment can favor Hyundai. Alternatively, Tata's value-for-money and compact SUV appeal might keep it in the lead.
The fight between Tata Punch and Hyundai Creta will be one of the most intense fights in the history of SUVs in India. Whether the affordable and practical Punch or the feature-packed and premium Creta, each of the SUVs carries some strengths of its own.
Regardless of which SUV takes the No. 1 title, one thing is clear—SUVs continue to dominate the Indian car market. The 2025-26 fiscal year is expected to bring even more competition, with new launches, EVs, and hybrid SUVs entering the fray.
So, will Tata Punch hold onto the crown, or will Hyundai Creta make a dramatic last-minute overtake? We’ll find out in a few weeks!
